What is a Guzheng?
The guzheng (古筝 gǔzhēng) is a Chinese plucked zither. It is a combination of two other traditional Chinese zithers, the se (瑟 sè) and the guqin (古琴 gǔqín). The se is an ancient plucked zither with 25 – 50 strings and movable bridges. The guqin, like the se, is an ancient plucked zither but with 7 strings and without movable bridges. The guzheng has the best of both worlds–21 strings with movable bridges. It is played in various techniques, producing different sounds and styles.
What does a guzheng sound like?
A guzheng has often been compared to with the sounds of a piano or harp. The sounds of a guzheng can be described as waterdrops, a waterfall, the countryside, or a thunderstorm.
How is the guzheng played?
The guzheng is played with both hands, the right hand strumming and plucking the strings while the left hand presses and slides on the strings to make different notes and sounds. Guzheng often use fingerpicks on one or both hands. It is played in various techniques, producing different sounds and styles. The guzheng can be applied to a variety of genres, such as rock, jazz, electronic music, and general improvisation.
